Software : New Oxford Thesaurus of Englishfrom: Focus Multimedia Ltd Accessories:
Editorial Review: Manufacturer's Description: Offering comprehensive and authoritative coverage of current English, the New Oxford Thesaurus of English is an ideal reference tool for use at home, school, and the office. Containing over 600,000 alternative and opposite words, this program will enrich your creative writing, essays, or letters, or simply your enjoyment of the English language. Key Features: Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Not the standard one expects from OxfordThe actual thesaurus is excellent; easier to use (though not as interesting or as comprehensive as) Roget's and therefore ideal when you want to find an alternative word quickly. The CD-ROM, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Not only is it often infuriating to use, as outlined by other reviewers; but if you upgrade to Windows Vista the only way you can get it to run is to fork out twenty euros for the latest version of ifinger, the search engine used by the thesaurus. Stick with the paper version; ... Read More Rating: - Useless rubbish! In several decades of computing this is the most useless piece of software and worst-behaved install it has been my misfortune to encounter. I bought it as an upgrade to the previous version, which was supposed not to work under my new XP system (it can in fact be persuaded to work under XP by copying any missing files manually and using the Compatibility function in the program's Properties). When the iFinger install fails to complete it cannot even be halted in the Windows Task Manager! ... Read More Rating: - great content, rubbish softwareThe ifinger pop-up software is utter rubbish and it doesn't work with Vista, the makers of the software have not released a Vista update and the OUP has no intention of publishing this thesaurus in an adult software program - what a shame! Here is an excerpt from a message I received from OUP: "I'm sorry to say that we don't know when iFinger are planning to release a Windows Vista-compatible version of their software engine. If you have registered with them for updates (via their ... Read More Rating: - Paltry and basic.Yes, I agree with the reviewer above: it's such a pity that the Oxford Complex/Compendium Thesaurus doesn't run under XP. Even it was not comprehensive, but it did have an adult quality about it. This new pop-up version is juvenile, paltry, and just too basic. It may appeal to some because it reduces the language to something easy . . . but in fact the English language is incredibly rich and diverse . . . and this thesaurus does not reflect this fact. Rating: - UselessThis thesaurus may be good. Possibly. But the software is such utter rubbish that it's virtually unusuable. One example (of many): the wretched thing pops up when you double-click a word and you are taken off into its (unreadable) pop-up field. Perhaps someone should have told the programmers that double-clicking words is used for other things on most computer set-ups. Such as selecting words to move or delete them. Which you are now no longer able to do. A few years ago I got free with some ... Read More Browse for similar items by category:
